Top 10 Takeaways: Salesforce Summer '20 Release Notes

It’s once again the month of May. A time of transition. Of changing seasons, warm jumpers, and cozy nights by the fire. Or the fresh Spring air and the smell of flowers blooming - depending on where you are in the world. But even more exciting than easing lockdown restrictions - the Summer ‘20 Salesforce release notes!

Historically we’ve seen major product announcements and feature updates, however, this season things are a little anticlimactic, if we’re being honest. We suspect it’s a symptom of the sheer size and scope of the platform and how it’s evolved into several different clouds over the years - effectively leaving less time for major releases and more focus on tweaks and features. 

On a recent Livestream, Dan and Peter highlighted what they deemed to be the top 10 takeaways from the release notes for the core platform. For more commentary and detail about the release notes, watch the replay of the episode from our weekly SFDC Academy Livestream.

Sandbox preview: May 29-30, 2020
Summer '20 production release:
- First Release window: June 12
- Second Release window: July 10
- Third Release window: July 17-18, 2020


1. Splitview

  • A new view for list views alongside Table and Kanban
  • Presents a list of results in a left pane that is fixed and right pane that changes to the record you click on
  • A simple new feature that greatly enhances productivity

2. Lightning Messaging Service

  • Streamline pages with multiple components 
  • Components are listening for context when a new message is published
  • Automatically determine next best action in (near) real time
  • Ultimately creating better outcomes and efficiencies
  • Similar to how other development frameworks operate 

3. Einstein Voice Assistant

  • Dictation capabilities for notes and commands
  • Significant time saver e.g. entering notes after client meetings on the fly
  • Key to success will be getting the context of what the speaker is attempting to instruct and Salesforce understanding to correctly deliver 
  • Keeping up w common functionality on other consumer platforms: Alexa, Siri, etc. 

4. Report Attachments

  • CSV output as an attachment on report subscription emails
  • Useful for users just looking for the data
  • Potential use case: send to an automated service to take action on the data.
  • This could be a very basic way of building an integration and getting data to the right places

5. Salesforce Optimiser App

  • Recommendations to help maintain your org and avoid technical debt
  • Could use as a trigger to create a backlog in JIRA for any code or dev work required based on recommendations or alerts
  • Examples include: unassigned page layouts, unused dashboards, permission sets with a low number of users, and API versions

6. B2B Commerce

  • B2B Commerce templates Integrated into the core of the commerce offering
  • Enables users to design, build and launch seamless buyer experiences
  • Especially relevant now as businesses are evaluating online customer experience and bridging physical to digital commerce
  • Challenge will be integrating into the entire sales process 

7. Investing in Vertical Clouds

  • Lots of investment into verticals: health, financial services, consumer, manufacturing and sustainability clouds 
  • Signal that Salesforce is setting up bundles relevant to industries to get more functionality out of box 

8. Improvements to Flow

  • A move towards point-and-click; many things coded to trigger behind the scenes
  • Still requires longitudinal, critical thinking 
  • Auto launch flow option to present screens, run silently in the background or run flows in the system context
  • Trigger a flow from guest user context or data from a public community to create other objects not accessible to guest users

9. Viewing Records and Full View

  • Minimise and organise items in the view 
  • Toggle and customise views in Lightning
  • Simplified functionality 

10. Shared CSS

  • SFDX structure of directories to include a folder of common CSS across all your components
  • Streamline definitions when building external components: e.g. build style definitions once in Communities and all components will refer to the common definition
  • Brings Lightning way of developing more in line with other open source frameworks and platforms familiar to devs 

BONUS! Dynamic Forms

  • Built on a new page layout to provide more flexibility
  • Ability to drill down to field level, swap out custom components
  • Permissioned visibility based on criteria like profiles 
  • Progressive forms drastically simplify the experience, building as the user marks specific checkboxes
  • Enables quick set up without the use of code
